Short but sweet romance.

“I don’t deserve you, but the truth is, I can’t let anyone else have you.”

I have been eying this book up for a while since spotting it on Amazon and knowing it was on KU and I fancy a shifter book, I knew that it was the perfect time to start it.

But to my disappointment I had to only rate it a 2⭐️. This story was really fast paced and I’m not really fond of fast paced books 😬. I just felt like the whole story and romance was rushed, I hadn’t noticed how short the book was until I downloaded it.

There wasn’t much backstory to the characters that you meet, and even if you did get a backstory it was a quick description. This book is a paranormal romance and from my experience I have had vampire books or wolf books that focus on one species. This book had too many shifter species to concentrate on they had dragons, bears, lions, wolves, polar bears, foxes, tigers all in one town…I just thought it was too much.

And this story was just too predictable too. Because the story was fast paced you just knew what was going to happen. I mean they couldn’t just be happy all the time so you knew something was going to happen…but even that was rushed.

The only thing I enjoyed was the characters and how protective/possessive her mate was and calling her HIS mate.

Apart from that I had to force myself to finish to the end as I wanted to know what happened. This is the first book in the series and I’m not sure I will be continuing it, which is a shame since I wanted to see the other characters get their mates x

I absolutely adored this story! I loved getting to go back to Blackstone. This is a spinoff series for the Blackstone Dragon series. It is set in the same town and there are some crossover characters but you do not need to have read that series to start this one. If you have read that series you will get to see some of the characters from before and get a little catch up on where they are now. We get to know Damon and Anna Victoria pretty well throughout this story. The book primarily focuses on the two of them and their interactions with and about each other. We get to see Damon struggle with learning that Anna Victoria is his mate and the fact that he doesn't think he can have her because of his past. Anna Victoria is trying to figure out what she wants out of life and how to start over. She is running from an jilted at the altar fiance and father that she doesn't want anything to do with anymore. I liked how things developed between these two. Damon is grumpy for majority of the story until he gives in and actually talks to Anna Victoria about what is going on. I really enjoyed it and it was a great introduction to this series. I am looking forward to more.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Is this book ever a surprising little gem! I’ve been interested in trying out small town shifter romances for a while, but I hadn’t been able to find any that grabbed my attention. They all sound too cheesy or sweet or unintentionally ridiculous for my liking. This book is just the right amount of sweet and funny with just a hint of suspense. While Damon knows the instant he sees that gorgeous runaway bride shooting back tequila shots in a bar that she’s his mate, things aren’t immediately easy for them. He tries to push her away, even though the bear inside him roars that she’s his destiny.
There’s a lot of humor in this book, but not so much that the characters don’t have deep and tragic backstories. The book is quite short, but we still have plenty of time to delve into why Damon is pushing Anna Victoria away. Anna Victoria isn’t without her own secrets, and the reason she left her fiance at the altar isn’t as simple as you’d expect.
All in all, this was a great first in a series (though I suspect that this is a spin-off series, I’m going to have to do some digging!). I’m looking forward to the second book, where Gabriel will finally meet his mate--who is clearly the new baker at the bakery who bakes those pies he’s so addicted to! XD Ahhh so cute
