I loved learning about Jewish people who migrated to America from Spain. The oral tradition of passing on language and customs was lovingly displayed in this biography.

I didn't know anything about Flory Jagoda or her music until I read this book. I didn't know about Ladino, the language of the Jewish people from Spain, until I read this book. That's what a good book is to do: open people's eyes to other cultures and peoples.

Beautiful illustrations and an interesting and inspiring story. I love that this book teaches about the Sephardim. Ashkenazi stories and traditions are much more widely known and written about so it great to see that inclusion. I enjoyed the Ladino vocabulary as well.

I've always loved the song "Ocho Candelikas!" I had no idea of Flory Jagoda's fascinating life story! So grateful for this book and its important reflection on Sephardic Jewish history. For grades 2 & up.

Wonderful, terrible story of the power of music and heritage. Accordion and guitar player who kept Ladino songs alive. “Ocho Kandelikas”

4.5/5 stars - colorful illustrations. A great story of bringing traditions with you and keeping them alive even as your family if forced to flee persecution over and over again.

I love the paper origami birds made out of sheet music that follow her ship away on one of the ending spreads. What a beautiful way to symbolize bringing her music with her.

Notes: Jewish, Music, folk artist, Sephardim (Jews from Spain), Ladino (language of Jews from Spain, Judeo Spanish), refugees, Bosnia
