Ernest Cline's books are basically meant to evoke that "OMG YES!!!!" reaction from nerds, and he thinks the way to best do that is by constantly referencing things (both subtly and overtly) that "only nerds would get." This is fine, I guess, but when this already exists (in Ready Player One), it doesn't need to exist here, too.

I guess it's okay to totally ape the stories of the books that influence you, as long as you reference them ad nausea?

I'm not a big fan of YA and this book is a perfect example of why. Basically a novelization of a future movie project. Zero character development beyond 80's teen movie tropes, Zero plausibility in any plot point, therefore no drama, no emotional impact, no aftertaste whatsoever. He could have called this book Zima.

Ugh. Super disappointing. Eye-rollingly bad at many points. The nerd references are shoehorned in, overdone, and completely unbelievable. Characters are shallow, plot-twists are telegraphed from miles away, and the ending is mush.

I liked Ready Player One, but this book is just an infinitely worse version of Ender's Game that keeps bringing up Ender's Game and drawing attention to the fact that it is inferior.

Not as good as RP1. But significantly more fun than other things. 2 stars!

Don’t stop at Ready Player One with Ernest Cline — this one packs an equally 80s-reference-filled, action-ladened punch.

Honestly? A book with a lot of “this is a plot hole” and “Nope! Let’s info dump and actually I just fixed it” moments. It felt very convenient all the time. Tbh mid
