Book #87 Read in 2018
The Potty Mouth at the Table by Laurie Notaro

This is a collection of short essays that are humorous and entertaining. Notaro covers many topics in an interesting, entertaining way. I recommend this to fans of Jen Lancaster's books. I borrowed this book from the public library.

I wanted to give this book a 3.5 but that wasn't an option so because I do love Laurie and usually giggle all the way through her books I gave it a 4 instead of. 3. I'm not exactly sure what it as about this book that made it not as enjoyable as others I have read by her. This book felt a little more angry then others... Some of the insults felt harder and less good natured. I will still read more of Laurie but this one is just not my favorite.

Humorous short essays. I love her self-deprecating style.

Notaro is at her best writing autobiographical insights, and this book is about as good as you'll get from her.

I used to really look forward to reading Laurie Notaro's books, but gone are the days of laughing until I wheeze and re-reading chapters because they were just that great.

I barely mustered a smirk through most of this; there is humor in snark, and then there is bitter snark. Relatable bits: the hoarding of seeing fabric and the annoyance at seeing food on a restaurant menu that is barely considered food (nettles, I'm looking at you). First chapter of annoyance at pretentious food/foodies? Hey, me too! Second chapter? Huh. I guess she's grumpy. Third? Give it a rest.

The last chapter would drag this up to a 2.5, I guess.

This was my first foray into the world of humor essays and I enjoyed it. Notaro's conversational style helped to highlight the humor in everyday situations. You can't help but identify with most of the situations she finds herself in. I found a couple spots a little problematic but not enough to ruin my enjoyment of the whole.

Lots of funny read alouds, which is pretty much what I look for in a Laurie Notaro book. The last story was very sad, though, and kind of threw me.

I will always love Laurie Notaro for introducing the phrase "chub rub" into my life, but I did not love this book. The chapters were hit and miss, and perhaps my timing was bad with some of them (the chapter about food poisoning ended up being my lunch break reading one day, etc.) I love a snarky narrative, but a lot of this crossed the line into too bitchy. I did not find myself wishing I would bump into Laurie and become her new BFF which is...kind of what I'm looking for from a humor writer.
