An important and challenging book. I started it with little knowledge of the Church’s history in race relations and finished it with a detailed understanding. Furthermore, many of the attitudes and problems described (e.g. racism, underrepresentation, lack of sound theological understanding among many laypersons [some of whom seem to replace Christianity with a simple “faith in faith”]) are relevant today as they were in the past. I believe that we must work towards reconciliation and to do so we must have a detailed and accurate understanding of our histories, both the good and the bad. Therefore, I recommend this book to anyone that worships, serves, or is interested in the Episcopal Church in the United States.
