So. I really liked each issue in this book. But they also felt very disjointed. Like, the last issue gives a great backstory, but it doesn't connect to any of the plot that had been building up in the previous ones. I enjoyed them all, but I also felt it was lacking a bit.

I was initially skeptical, but as I read further, the story seemed to expand and deepen. This is a lot richer than your average superhero story in the way that it deals with emotion. Great stuff.

Strong Female Protagonist explores the nuances of privilege: being born with power you didn't ask for, being admired for things you regret doing, feeling simultaneously too big and too small for your britches... and it's also about superheroes.

The story and art are a little unpolished (it gets better in later chapters), but dang the moral quandaries in here are just so ~spicy~

Content warnings for this series as a whole: physical and emotional abuse of a child, graphic violence, gore, homophobia mention, transphobia mention, kidnapping, torture, pregnancy, mental illness

It just wasn't for me. Others will probably love it.

Lost a star for the super intense Mississippi/rural stereotyping.

I am absolutely loving this book, the first collection from https://www.strongfemaleprotagonist.com. The writing on this is superb. I am not really a fan of the superhero genre in that I do not particularly like stories that involve solving problems by beating people up. Strong Female Protagonist takes a very different direction, in exploring what life is like after the individual figures out they aren't making anything better.

I really enjoyed this! It reminded me of Squirrel Girl but with fewer ridiculous jokes, less computer science, and more darkness. The only thing about this one, is it made me feel like I missed a whole lot of back story. It kept referring to things that Mega Girl did in the past as if I was supposed to know about them, but I don't. And I looked online, doesn't seem to be a thing. So I guess everyone feels about as lost as I do when it comes to those things.

Lots of good quotes in here, and questions about what it really means to be a super hero. What is the point of it all? Regenerating super heroes who become perpetual organ donors. Mindreading supervillains who under cover giant conspiracies and turn out to be sweet and sexy when it comes right down to it. A type of body armor caused by a painful cancer. A man who hates superheros because of what happened to his past lover... it's all quite deep.

But clearly, the artist has never actually seen someone smoke a cigarette before.

Not that comics aren't generally a vehicle for philosophy, but this one laid it all out very well. I liked it more than I imagined I would (it was just a very wordy comic for this lazy reader, lol). I'm going to have to keep up with the web comic now!
