Fragmentary phrases offer brief images and insights into the landscape around the nuclear submarine base at Faslane, Scotland, building up over the course of the book. Will reward careful rereading but is at times obscure to someone unfamiliar with the history and geography of the area. I most enjoyed Loose's evocative phrases about the trees and animals within the landscape, and piecing together a narrative around recurring characters like the crow.
