i would take my rating with a grain of salt as it's heavily influenced by how much i enjoyed the book as a person who is very much not within the YA age range anymore (as always, my ratings are highly subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt.... every time)

thoughts to come in a vlog, but most important things 1) i love kacen callender's voice, which has been strong and distinct since the beginning 2) i really need to stop reading YA contemporary when YA is not my contemporary anymore 3) sexy times via audiobook ruin it for me and i'm SORRY i really am

DNF'd at 42%.

I really tried to give the audiobook a go and I wasn't overly bothered by the cheating, but got too frustrated sitting here wondering what the point of this whole book is.

They're just sitting around being rude to each other, ignoring each other, or manipulating each other. And Nate Bird is legit insufferable.

I really tried to find the redeeming qualities of this book, but as someone with personal experience in cheating, the amount of it this book had was badly handled and unforgivable. I’ll talk more in my wrap up but ugh this was emotionally draining and frustrating to read.

This is such a cute love story!! I mean it’s a queer childhood best friends to lovers!, if that doesn’t convince you to read it I don’t know what will.
I love the idea that the only thing a love story needs to be epic is that the people in it love each other and are happy and that’s it.
One of the main characters is hard of hearing and I love how it was portrayed in the story, how Nate learns ASL for him and how it is used throughout the story to communicate.
Also both the main characters are pocs, so this book really brings diversity

Nate is pining for his ex-girlfriend/best friend Flo when his once best friend makes a return to his life. Oliver James (Ollie) and Nate have unresolved conflict to address but once they do it's clear from the start their friendship has the potential of becoming more--if Nate could only get rid of his feelings for Flo and get rid of Oliver's boyfriend Aiden.

The story centers heavily around a will they or won't they premise. While that's cute for a while, it gets old at around the 40 percent mark. Nate is aggravating and not a particularly likable character. At times you empathize with his emotional hang-ups but much of the time it feels like he's being a jerk because he can and that's not appealing in the least.

Also, while I applaud the use of a character that's Hard of Hearing, the ASL was tough to follow. It actually became more of a distraction than an addition because I couldn't always decipher it's meaning, even with the extra care taken to describe its use.

As for the secondary characters, I had a fairly decent idea what they looked like but very little knowledge of who they were. None of these characters are well-developed. The most I can tell you about any of them is they're either worried about being popular or having sex. Nate, the main character should be the most well-developed, but he may as well have been an empty vessel for the depth he provided.

Overall, it was a good effort but by the halfway point a lot of the action felt like filler and much of the conflict was repetitive to the point of being annoying.

My god I wish there was a quarter of today’s resources available to gay teens when I was younger. Jealousy aside, this book was quite a treat. I quickly became engrossed in the story. I also jumped back and forth on how I felt about different characters. The relationships really brought me back to the the feelings of being younger even with all the modern progression the story displays.

I'm not sure how Balzer + Bray operates, but what ever they're doing over there I hope it continues for eternity. I've never had a publisher release so many of my favorite books, but they've done it again with This is Kind of an Epic Love story.

The plot goes like this: Nate is just getting out of a relationship with his best friend Florance. The two are trying to find the middle of friendship and ex-partners which becomes extremely sticky once you learn how and why the couple broke up. Then we meet Oliver James Hernandez. Ollie is a family friend/ once-upon-a-crush of Nate's. He is the most adorable character of this book (and there's a lot of cuteness). Oliver has to work through a frustrating family dynamic, and figure out his long distance relationship while his friendship with Nate rekindles.

I feel like I could talk forever about why everyone should read this book, but because I shouldn't write a five paged essay right now, know this. This story is about two imperfectly perfect brown boys, its about grief, rejection, and learning ones worth. It's about the past and how we cant let it ruin our future. It is an epic kind of love story, a story everyone should experience.

I encourage everyone to read this book when it comes out. Buy it, borrow it, request it from the library, do what ever you have to do in order to not miss this one when it makes it's way to the shelves. I'm already counting the days until I can own my own physical copy.
