I don't think a book has ever physically affected me this much before. Let me explain. I was so invested in Helen's journey that whenever something awful happened to her (like 90% of this book is her depressed, anxious, and tormented) I would feel sick to my stomach. It affected my own mood. I thought I was having my own depressive episode. But no, I just really felt for Helen. I loved the initial mystery of Helen and why was she living with her son in Wildfell Hall. I loved that she stuck to her own morals and boundaries.
Spoiler She slammed the door in his face! She left him! She's filthy rich and can do whatever she wants now! She basically proposes to Gilbert! Huntingdon can suck it! Look at her thrive!
What a shocking thing that must have been for the 19th century reader. It's still shocking now. Man, I did not expect to love this as much as I did. This is going to stick with me for a long time.

P.S. I don't like Gilbert. He's not that great and Helen deserves better!
P.P.S. Yeah, I said the same thing in my previous Bronte review, but these women do deserve better!!

Book 34

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a novel by Anne Brontë told through letters and journal entries. Helen falls in love with a man not known for good character and grows to regret her marriage to him. It's a long, though engaging, book with a very slow-burn. The main characters are dynamic and infuriating at times. I resent the hasty resolution and the time spent on characters that dropped out of the story. It's a classic, classic work.

The back of my copy of this says that Charlotte Brontë considered this book "an entire mistake." Which just goes to show once again that Charlotte Brontë and I do not agree.
