Harry is about to graduate from college when his stepmom calls and tells him that his father has died. When he comes home, he finds that the police are unsure if this was an accident or murder.

I'm finding Peter Swanson hit or miss for me. I loved The Kind Worth Killing, Before She Knew Him, and Eight Perfect Murders. But I recently read his upcoming release, Every Vow You Break and didn't like it at all. Ditto for this one. I never connected with any of the characters and the entire plot was icky and unbelievable. And the ending was terrible. I recommend skipping this one.

When Harry's father died he had to join his step mother, Alice, in Maine to help with the family book store. The death was initially thought to be an accident but then police inform him and Alice that the death is being investigated as a homicide. The title of this book is a reflection of Alice, who is beautiful but mysterious. Some parts of the story are disturbing but not unbearable.

I listened to this as an audiobook and hated to hit pause. I've read almost all of Peter Swanson's books and this is one of his best.

A sordid tale about some very disturbed people.

I apologize to anyone who sees my list of books I like and thinks it's a good way to pick things. Because it only sometimes is. At first this book bored me. Then around 40 pages in, it got batshit crazy.

Everyone was hooking up, everyone is getting murdered, and the whole background Pedophilia theme was ROUGH. I really enjoyed reading this and it had a satisfying ending which is what can ruin a whole book for me so I enjoy "Just desserts".

Having read Lolita merely a week ago, this novel conjures up not distant at all memories.

Despite the association, I really enjoyed this thriller. Switching between now and the past as well as narrators, it worked well. I liked both the current and past stories although I enjoyed the past story a bit more. I liked that the perspective switched genders.

Compelling and interesting read.

IDK how to rate this because it's really creepy and messed up. I figured out the twist but I still didn't want to stop reading.

I know alot of people were dissapointed in this book and for Peter Swanson I guess they should be however the book overall for me wasn't bad. I enjoyed it enough.

On the one hand, this book was really good. The murder mystery intrigued me and I quite liked the son Harry. However, the flash backs made me squirm… yes back stories are needed for depth into the character but I’m sorry- please don’t romanticise a 50+ women having s^x with a 17 year old…
Then there is the whole Alice thing and omg- it was a mess. However it is three stars because it may of been a mess but I read it damn quickly and engulfed the main plot line. Only 5 chapters I wish weren’t included tbh x
