This book is somewhat of a prequel to the first two books in the series. We see the life and struggles in the Lynch family through Joey's eyes.
Once again, Chloe Walsh knows how to make me feel pain and anguish I've never felt in my life. Seeing the story from Joey's pov was something else. He was the one that endured the most and had too many responsibilities on his shoulders... My heart hurt and cried for him.
Aoife is exactly what Joey needed in his life. She is the one that challenges him and brings the best in him. From flirty banter to best friends to the love of their lives, Aoife and Joey were meant for each other. I loved seeing their relationship and feelings grow and develop into love. I didn't really like Aoife in the first books, she felt like a filler character, but that's probably because she didn't interact much with Shannon which was the main character, so she appeared very briefly in a few scenes. But here... Aoife shines and I love her.
Despite wanting to slap her on the back of the head for how she handled her relationship with Paul, she came through and showed us that she is indeed level-headed. She showed us how true, deep, consuming love feels like. How important it is to be there for your loved one, to support and to encourage. She also showed us that you cannot change someone if they don't want to be changed.
That's why I appreciate Joey's character even more. Even though the ending hurt me to no ends, I appreciate the author for making Joey choose correctly and prioritising the most important and desperate thing at that time over his love. Because his love for Aoife and hitting an unimaginable rock bottom opened his eyes.
Why 4.5 stars? Because, I wasn't left with the emptiness and desperation the first two books left me. It's probably because the story isn't new because I've read it in Shannon's books. I would have avoided reading Binding 13 and Keeping 13 at work because I know I wouldn't be able to stop myself from crying. Reading Saving 6 was hard but not impossible and I could stop myself from crying.
