If I hadn’t read the first 100 pages I would have rated it more highly but hey that’s not how books work, is it?

i dont even mind that this book isnt centered around oliver-elio (although i think its rather stupid of aciman that he dont try to milk some money out of this). i was hoping i could get some really beautiful and heart-wrenching stories and quotes from this book like i did from cmbyn, no matter who the main character is.

none of that. i get none of that. the entirety of this book is terrible. every 1 star reviews this book got captured my thoughts exactly.

I want to start this review by saying that I think Andre Aciman is a beautiful writer and I enjoyed the themes of regret, missed chances and lost love. However, this book was disappointing and honestly, I was bored for a large majority.

The book is split into four sections. The first section follows Elio's dad as he meets a younger woman on the train and they begin to fall in love. It is very insta-lovey and I just simply did not care. Plus, the woman, Miranda, told a weird story at one point about wanting to sleep with her brother which just disturbed me. At the end of this section, Elio finally appears - on page 107. That is ridiculous considering it's a sequel to a book in which he is the main character and I'm reading this for him, not his dad.

The second section follows Elio as he guess what? Falls in love with an older man (25-30 years his senior by the way - his age gap with Oliver is measly in comparison). I don't know what this author's obsession with age gaps is but it was kind of overkill. This was slightly more interesting because it was Elio but again I didn't really see the chemistry and was pretty bored. There's also a lot of pages dedicated to a music mystery which was whatever.

The third section follows Oliver as he throws a party in which he invites two people he wants to sleep with, but his wife is also in the room as well as both of their partners...Regardless, this section was more relevant because it was ultimately leading up to the revelation that he wanted to be with Elio.

Finally, the last section is their reunion, the thing I came for. I liked this part of the book, and I liked the small mentions of each other throughout the book but it was rather insignificant as a whole. I expected it to be the main story, or at least a bigger part. As a result, it doesn't work well as a sequel.

Overall, I enjoyed getting a glimpse into Elio and Oliver's lives in the future and I'm happy with where their story ended, but the majority of the book was not about that. I also found it rather jumpy and fragmented. When the perspective changed, we weren't told straight away who it was, thought it wasn't too difficult to figure it out, or how much time has passed. I assumed Elio's section to be straight after his father's but then he mentioned his new brother and I was like hold up!

It took me 3 days to finish a 250 page book. Do you know how upsetting that is to me?!?! I kept having to shut it, because I was holding back from DNF’ing it. The only sliver of hope is knowing that there would be a snippet of ElioxOliver somewhere.

The last 11 pages. How ridiculous. I would have rather never picked it up and lived in my own imagination on how they moved on. Ugggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!

This deserves less, but I’m a good person.
