One of those books I find really difficult to rate because I'm torn between how compelling I found the story and craft & execution.
Worth reading regardless even when parts of it were clumsy. It's hard not to lament the fact that with the guidance of a good editor, it would've been a draft away from being a really great novel besides telling a profound and interesting story.

A single mom, four kids bickering in the car, in a split second mom stops the car and kicks her fifteen year old daughter out on a dark road.

The premise of the book sounded so good, but it just fell flat. Parts of it were good. I would sum this up as mostly a grieving family missing their deceased father, an absent mother, four kids raising themselves.

Pretty much what happens in a lot of homes on a daily basis. Just could not connect to this one.
