I want to like Calvin and Hobbes. I like the art. There is always some clever writing. Susie is always well written. But Calvin is such a brat. And not a smart one at that. I always feel so much sympathy for his parents. I'm just clearly not the target audience. Hobbes on the other hand. Remove Calvin from this and have it only be Hobbes, that would be an improvement. Perhaps one of the books will be more my taste. This is good but not for me. Just like if it were a horror book.

Every time I re-read one of these it's just as brilliant as the first time I read them.

For the 2015 Reading Challenge, I chose this one for my "book published the year you were born". I know it's a bit of a cheap shot since it's much quicker to read than a novel, but I'm so glad I did. Not only am I old enough to know all the big words and get all the jokes, but there's also some subtlety to the relationships I had missed reading Calvin and Hobbes as a kid.

Three collections down, and like the others I'll do some quick highlights of what I loved about it. There's a lot to love here - Bill Watterson was making magic.

I love:
- That Hobbes continues to attack Calvin as he gets home from school (or when, uncharacteristically, he decides not to - 'so you're home').
- Calvin's magic carpet.
- Calvin's first trip to the doctor.
- Calvin's first camping trip.
- Calvin's time machine (which just happens to look a whole lot like his transmogrifier..).
- Calvin's secession from the family and subsequent (attempted) trip to the Yukon.
- When Calvin's uncle Max comes to visit.
- Calvin's new and improved transmogrifier gun.

You are loving awareness.

I feel compelled to write something, but honestly, what can you really say other than Watterson is a brilliant & hilarious writer packaged with the abilities of a wonderful illustrator. I love these books.
