Was not especially enchanted by the story. Beautiful language, but seemed over the top. More aiming to be literary than true.
To be fair, I also think I read it too fast and wasn't in the right mindset to really appreciate this book.

This was just marvellous. Only Winterson can make me read a manifesto on cheating, trickery, and on the variables of love. Wonderful writing; with the usual ambiguity and other worldly prose. This was a much needed read after the latest Frankisstein. Thanks to my friend for recommending this to me.

I don't remember a single thing about this book. Is this the one with the couple who has the adulterous affair and then one of them dies? Or is this the one with the dog-boy (or was it a dog-girl)? I think that was Sexing the Cherry... clearly I need to re-read this book. All I am sure of is that it's not as strong - or as memorable - as Winterson's other works.

This novel is bursting with scope and brimming with possibilities and impossibilities. The prose is limitless, there is no boundary or barrier that the words do not cross or do not hope to cross. At once, it is a homage and parody of works preceding it; it is also capable of standing on its own as something entirely new. This is to be free, this is to flow. As the story warns of the dangers of cliché, it is entirely devoid of any. The sexless unnamed narrator, their lingering memories of romances profound and insignificant, and the unknown fates of Louise and other characters add on to the ever-prevailing pervasive sense of mystery shrouding this one acid-high-cerebral-dream of a novel.
