Oh Bernard Shaw, always one to go for the powerful feminist message and strong ending.

i get that joan is cool but this play just like- i feel like the author’s in elementary school writing a play for his schoolyard crush like this is just wild.

The "story" is much more centered around the men and their opinions of Joan than Joan herself. The epilogue felt gutting, as they all excused their actions toward her, as they had when she was alive.

However, excited to see it performed because we're adding swordfights (thank Jesus).

Jeanne D'Arc continues to be an elusive figure for anyone to write about. Though her life was very short a lot happened in it. Shaw did an admirable job trying to fit the biggest, most important bits of her life in a mere six scene play. The result is unexpected, but in a good way.

To Shaw, it seems, the most important characters in Jeanne's story were not the maid herself, but the people who supported her, abandoned her, and, later, sent her to her death. In focusing on these characters Shaw creates a truly original story about the saint. He also manages to create a play that both affirms and denies the mysticism of Jeanne. This is not surprising, considered he was an atheist. Still it was interesting, lots of authors could have taken less care.

Reading the play was dragged down a little bit by his introductory essay, but it gave key context to the play itself so I don't think you could skip it. Overall a very enjoyable read, and I hope I will be able to see it performed live someday.

This was such an enjoyable read. The introduction was as long as anything, but also I loved it. I learned a lot there, and I loved reading Shaw’s thoughts on his audience. And the play was humorous enough, but also super dramatic. I found it to be very well done and well thought out.
