This book has received very mixed reviews, so I'm glad I didnt see that until after I had already read it.
I, personally, enjoyed reading this and found myself laughing out loud from the very first page.
Some of the prose and dialogue was weird and cringey, but I preferred to laugh at the absurdity. The tone of the book shifted QUICKLY as it turns to loss and grief, and it stays there for the majority of the story. Of course it has its soft, fluffy, funny, and sexy moments. It also has a few dramatic moments that pulled tears from my eyes.
What I really appreciated was the way that the third-act break-up was handled. The break up is not a result of miscommunication, or situations where they fail to listen to each other, instead it is coming from a very real act of deception compounded by long-standing anxieties from both characters about their complicated situations. There was a decent build up to the break-up instead of a big in your face argument filled with confusion and misunderstanding. There are external factors that are pressuring these characters to come apart, that causes them to protect themselves.
The resolution, however, was too easy. The villain was too easy to beat at the end after 300 pages of fighting and stress caused by them. There could have been a better set-up for that. You know how the villain always explains their evil plan once they have the hero captive? It's a lot like that except they dont do it on purpose, they get caught and it doesnt feel natural for someone to talk about all their evil intentions in such a way.
The book has its flaws, but it was thoroughly enjoyable and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
