It has a light-hearted name and a deceptive synopsis but the premise of Hunting's "Meet Cute" is far more emotional.

This was an enjoyable read and I devoured it in one sitting.

Very sweet and cute to read. I did want to cry sometimes but didn’t. I really loved the characters. How did no one see the vodka coming?

The legal aspect was interesting but much of the book was too repetitive.
SpoilerThe characters needed to do more than constantly trace fingers along jawlines. More importantly, I'm confused how Kailyn's actions are ethical - how can you be a neutral party in a custody case if you have a personal relationship with one of the options?

*Slight Spoilers* I had a great time reading the book, but the author made some sexist comments that threw me off. She made a comment about a tall blonde with silicone lips and it looking like she had just blew a whole football team. It was an unnecessary description and didn't make me feel that the author would portray other women who isn't the protagonist well. At the end of the book, the author has the character chose her man over her career and the story depends on the male character to push her to advance in her career, which she deserves from her hard work and smarts.

I only recently discovered the enormous library of published works by Helena Hunting, so when I heard aboutMeet Cute, I was chomping at the bit waiting for it to be released!

When Kailyn is almost trampled by a gorgeous coed on the first day of classes as a law student, she had no idea it was the Daxton Hughes. Kailyn grew up binge-watching It’s My Life, the TV for which Dax is famous, but she had no idea she would someday meet the boy she drooled over. But her fantasy is far more impressive than reality.

Fast forward 8 years and Kailyn is an accomplished trust lawyer. Just when she feels like she has life figured out, the still impressively handsome Dax walks back into her life. Dax is now a successful entertainment lawyer, hoping to represent stars like his childhood self. But Kailyn isn’t impressed by Dax anymore, not since he robbed her of the #1 spot in their graduating class at law school.

When Dax comes to Kailyn for legal advice, she comes to the realization that more is at stake than her own pride. Dax has become the legal guardian of his 13-year-old sister, Emme, and he needs help in the battle to keep hisfamily together. Kailyn understands the importance of unusual familial bonds and puts her personal disputes aside in order to help Dax and Emme. And maybe, just maybe, Dax’s caring, gentle side with Emme starts to interest Kailyn after all.

“You know, generally when a man is close enough that I feel his breath on my face, he’s looking to rip my clothes off, not my head.”

I knew before going into this one that there was going to be A LOT of family stuff, i.e. children, parenting, etc. Although I’m relatively new to reading contemporary fiction and adult romance, I’ve come to understand that reading about such topics is a big turn off for me in books. I don’t plan on having children, however, sometimes I can enjoy reading about them. But other times it feels similar to being forced into an uncomfortable discussion with your parents about ‘where are my grandchildren?’ (not that my family talks like this). That being said, I was prepared to hear about Dax and his younger sister, Emme, and their journey. It was a little off-putting for me when all I wanted was for Dax and Kailyn’s relationship to blossom, but I understand that without Emme there would literally be zero plot.

Aside from my own personal qualms, I feel like Helene Hunting put a lot of consideration into Dax and Kailyn’s work lives and how it impacted their personal lives. Sometimes I feel like work is completely written out of contemporary books in favor of raunchy sex scenes, but Meet Cute had a better motive: make you love the main characters and their problems (solving them, of course).

Kailyn is written as a very strong character. She is very confident at work in trust law, but still maintains cases that keep her feeling fulfilled in family law. I do wish there were more chapters from Dax's point of view so it wouldn't feel so much like Kailyn was THE main character. I feel like I grew to love him over time due to this commitment to making Emme's life better, but I wish I could have bonded with him from the start like I did with Kailyn.

I'm pumped knowing that Helena Hunting has even more new novels on the horizon. I feel like I originally became a fan for her super juicy sex scenes I read in the Hooking Up series, but I’ve stayed for the character development and really entertaining dialogue between her realistic characters.

My Rating: ★★★

Content Trigger Warnings: loss of loved ones, details of custody litigations (of a child), talk of adoption and birth parents.

One of my favorite books this year so far! This is a different style for this author; I was expecting another crazy romp but this one is a serious, emotional, rational, and fantastic read. It has some humorous moments, but it was mostly just a wonderful love story with some angsty tones and wonderful characters.

Daxton Hughes was a child actor, wildly popular for his participation in a TV series, It’s My Life. Kailyn was a huge fan during her teen years, so when she ran into him on her first year of law school, she went total fangirl over him. This was a hugely comical scene, typical Helena Hunting. Then she reverted to her usual serious, studious and responsible persona. They were friendly rivals during their law studies, vying for the first position in their graduating class, until he tricked her from the coveted position.

Years later his parents die in an accident and he’s appointed guardian of his thirteen year old sister, Emme. There are issues with his guardianship and his aunt, who is not happy with the situation, and he seeks help with Kailyn who prepared Emme’s trust fund. Even though they were once rivals and she’s not happy with Dax, she liked Emme and feels for the young orphaned teenager. Since Kailyn lost her parents when she was in college, she understands the feelings Emme is going through. They connect and Emme finds a refuge in Kailyn.

I love how this author writes! Her books have a straightforward pace, she develops her characters and we get to know them and love them without excess prose and description. We fall in love with all three characters and we live them as they slowly turn into a family. We also hurt for young Emme as she deals with her pain, misses her mother, sasses her brother, and feels uncertain about her future. Dax has a hard time dealing with a young girl, with their grief and loss, with running a household and raising a teenager. He relies on Kailyn and she’s generous and kind and thoughtful as she helps the bereaved family. I just loved how the plot goes, felt suspense as the aunt’s schemes are unveiled, and Kailyn hides a secret. It was intriguing and riveting and fun. This is definitely one of the books you like to re-read and enjoy again, because it was just so cute and engaging and heartfelt. Loved it!

Meet Cute made me feel almost all of the feels. Kailyn's first meeting with Dax and going all fangirl on him - yeah, I can totally relate. I would have done the same damn thing in the same situation.

When they meet as adults, Kailyn is still hanging on to the resentment she had in graduating law school, when her late paper cost her the #1 spot in their class... to Dax. However, her immediate concern isn't Dax, but Dax's sister - after their parents' death, she is appointed as conservator of his sister's trust and has to work with Dax to resolve a custody issue with his aunt. Just why is his aunt fighting so much for custody of Elle when his parents' will explicitly states that Dax is to have custody? In working to protect Elle, Kailyn grows closer and closer with Dax...

As I mentioned before, this book brought lots of the feels. I ran the gamut of sweetly sighing for Kay and Dax, to anger with both of them (at different times), to sorrow for Elle's situation, to delight at the end. This was my first Helena Hunting book that I read and I instantly needed to find more of her books, which led to the Pucked series... more on that in another review. ;)

4.5 stars - I'm subtracting .5 star for the 'I should tell him ________ but I guess I'll wait' plot device. It's the worst plot device in the known universe! But it was a minor part of the story so I'll only subtract 1/2 star.

A sweet story of Kailyn and Daxton (an ex-teen TV heart throb). They met in law school and were rivals, but haven't seen each other in five years. The novel was pretty predictable (especially the end) but still enjoyable so I'll forgive the predictability.

Themes: law, custody, hate-to-love, 2nd chances, LA, teen star, orphans

Meet Cute by Helena Hunting was a pleasantly enjoyable read! I was surprised that this wasn't going to be featured by meet cutes in the story like other romance books I have read were, but I still enjoyed this plot line.

I'm beginning to like those post college friendships type of books because they seem to be developed well. I really liked Kailyn and Dax.

Meet Cute is not a 100 percent fluffy romance book despite what the cover leads you to believe. There's that saying that says don't judge a book by it's cover. It took me on an emotional rollercoaster but I think that rollercoaster made me attached to the characters.

It was a little predicable but most romance books are predictable. I spotted who the villian of the story was going to be before they were revealed but I'm not spoiling that here.

I definitely recommend giving Meet Cute a try, but you may need a box of tissues handy if you cry easily during books and movies. Meet Cute was a five star library ebook.
