If only a book like this could have been published in my early career instead of learning these lessons on my own. Yes, it’s possible to be considered nice and still be a strong leader. I listened on Audible but will buy the hard copy to underline and dog ear to share with the rising stars I work with. A must read for any young woman launching her career.

why do i subject myself to this genre? chapter on mentorship was good. otherwise, really hard to get through. 3/5 stars.

Not much one for self help books but this one was recommended by a mentor and has some interesting anecdotes.

Very helpful "women's career" book that excels at specifics. Fran Hauser achieves this partly by focusing very tightly on her own experiences. I felt like I knew her at the end, and saw very clearly how the episodes of her career translate to my own.
I also really appreciated how she included perspectives from when she was both an "underling" and a manager.

This is the book I needed to read at this point in my career - being kind, does not equate people-pleasing and an absence of advocacy. Mentors matter. This is a good book for the right type of person - but not for all.

Had I found this book when I first started my career I might’ve found it more engaging. Like any other self help book, I’ll take the pieces I found most valuable and discard the ones that weren’t relevant or no longer apply in this current age (at least in my industry experience).

I plan on giving this to my 20 something daughter to read but I'm going to ask for it back .There is some very useful advise for women of all ages. I am by nature extroverted, peppy, friendly and kind. This has made it challenging in my position as Head Of Operations at times because I get under estimated and have allowed myself to be walked upon. No more, I can be firm but kind (any Sound of Music fans out there). Our business coach and I have already been working on some of these techniques with me. This is just reinforcing the lessons and giving me really practical skills to be applied every day.

Definitely contains some decent advice, but got repetitive quickly. More focused on less assertive types looking to find a way to balance assertiveness and friendliness than those like myself who are more assertive but hoping for a way to strike a balance in the other direction.

Wish I read this in my first year or two working but think every woman starting in corporate America should read it
