I was so excited when I saw that Stephen King had written another post-apocalyptic book. I LOVE LOVE The Stand! It's one of my all time favorite books, and I had hoped that this would be similar. Instead, this was a disappointment pretty much from the first page.

The only character I liked even a little bit died about midway through. I hated the main protagonist and I honestly just wanted the story to end. I ended my reading of this book by throwing it against the wall.

Read The Stand, it's so beyond better than this book.

I’ve heard of things about this story, but nonetheless I tried to go with an open mind. I knew the basic premise of the novel but was surprised to read the parallels of what seems to be a zombie apocalypse type story. I like Clay as the protagonist but found myself gravitating more toward Tom (I wonder why). I agree with many other King lovers that the novel has a strong start and behind to fizzle out about halfway through. Especially once Dan, Ray, & Denise get introduced I felt like we lost connection with the core 4 characters. I liked the ending and how it was open ended but I would love to find out what happens to Johnny and if the duo can reconnect with their old friends. Also, am I the only one wondering what post cell phone life looks like in modern (2008) society?

King is doing his bottom two writing-isms: racist dog whistles and taking his characters on too long of a “journey” that we gain nothing from. We’ve borderline completely lost the point of the book, I’ve been confused for the last 50 pages, and something about the flow of this book is making it illegible to me.

Audio.

It's Stephen King. It's an interesting concept. It was good. I'm just not raving over it, because while it was a good story and well-enough told, it just didn't do anything special for me. Also, it felt fairly dated- I don't know how much it will hold up in 50 years, as many of his other books will because they're timeless.

Oddly the ending wasn't terrible.

Probably a 3.5/5. Definitely not top tier King, but certainly very readable. Got better as it went on - as much as opening with an extended sequence of unremitting chaos sounds fun, I'd have preferred to get a feel for the character(s) first. Think I prefer King when the POV jumps around, but the sense of claustrophobia and oppressive inevitability as the post-apocalyptic situation develops was well sold.

I'll always be here for a decent apocalypse story, and while reminiscent of the superior The Stand at times, there are enough new beats here to keep things interesting.

“It’s like the fucking night of the living dead.”

I really liked the sound of this book! It has been on my TBR for a very long time!

I do love a good Dystopia/apocalyptic read.

“They’re travelling in packs and they’re not killing each other anymore. I don’t know if that makes them smarter or not. But they’re still killing us, I know that.”

And with this one, I kept being pleasantly surprised through out. Just unique and gory as hell! Completely engrossed.

BRILLIANT! ....

Until the ending!!!!!

I had heard people saying the ending was not great however, I kept an open mind but I’m with the majority of people. The ending just fell flat. I was so disappointed!

Apart from that this story was great.

I found myself becoming more fearful of my phone as I kept reading!!
