I didn’t like this book as much as the first, and it did take me longer to get through it than the first.

Like the first book, this book meanders and it sometimes seems like not much is happening. I definitely felt this way during the Felurian chapters. To me they were extremely unnecessary and boring. I’m not sure what the purpose of that part of the story served for the overall plot. I had this problem with the Ademre chapters too, but not as bad.

Other than that, this book was really good! It was well written and entertaining. I liked that we got to leave the university and explore the world a bit more. Kvothe’s adventures in Vintas and Ademre were fun to read about. I also felt this book helped flesh out Kvothe’s friends a bit more too. Although I’m not sure how to feel about Denna. She disappears and then reappears when you least expect her to, which is interesting at first but then gets old after a while. I would also have liked to see her character fleshed out a bit more too.

So, I would say this book wasn’t as good as the first but it’s still good regardless!

CW: mention of SA in review

I really enjoy this series and am hopeful that the author will finish it someday. The storytelling is captivating, and I’m invested in finding out how the story ends.

I do have a problem with it though - that I felt in the first book, The Name of the Wind, and really just solidified in this one - and that is the attitudes toward women. The series takes about 400 pages to even introduce a female character and when it does, it’s through the lens of a 14 year old boy who is completely obsessed with her and flattens her into a one-dimensional character. Unfortunately, The Wise Man’s Fear doesn’t do much to rectify the situation. There are a few more female characters, which helps, but the protagonist still holds such a weird view toward women. He’s either objectifying them or saving them at every turn.
I think the thing that was the nail in the coffin for me, was when he responded “not all men” after saving two women who had been held hostage and raped repeatedly.
I just…

There are other weird moments around the treatment of women in these book too, you don’t have to look very hard.

Another fun trip with Kvothe. Doesn’t sing the same way the first one does, but a really fun read with a return from the characters I already loved and some great new ones.

The book was good, I liked that Kvothe got some character development he REALLY needed. I wish he didn’t spend so much time in the university or so much time simping over Denna

I really enjoyed this book!

My favorite sequence is the time Kvothe spent with Felurian. (What can you expect? I’m faerie trash.)  I did not enjoy the Ademre sequence - even though the women are badasses, I still found it somehow misogynistic. Maybe it’s because of Kvothe, and how he tainted the time he spent there by talking about how it’s not proper for women to fight, women where he comes from do not fight, and bemoaning that he was paired to spar with a little girl. I just found that that part of the book really dragged, and even though we spent a lot of time there, I didn’t get close to any of the women, and I didn’t get the feeling that Kvothe really respected any of the women? I was waiting for it to be over, and him to go back to the Maer. Even though I didn’t care much for the court politics and the Maer, I still felt like there was more life in that part of the story than the piece in the Ademre.

But aside from that portion of the book… this was such a captivating and excellent story. I still love the parts with Bast, the Chronicler, and Kvothe-the-tavernkeep the most. It feels so fresh to read a fantasy story this way - to have the days laid out this way, and the story told from the hero’s perspective while a perfect stranger and truly good friend listen in.

Bast is obviously still my favorite

I love a scary faerie man
