This was a 2-3 star read for me all the way up until a scene towards the end where the main character Martin does something so cruel to a cat that it literally made me gasp when I read it. I don't really care what reason was given for what he did, I don't think that it in any way, shape, or form was necessary to have been added in and did nothing but make me want to stop reading. I am not an overly sensitive reader and I found that scene jarring and upsetting. I don't understand why it wasn't edited out, it did nothing to move the story forward or portray the depth of Martin's grief. I can't recommend anyone pick this one up and it is entirely due to that scene.

I received a review copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

First off I didn’t think the writing was that good but perhaps translated it could be inaccurate…but then I got frustrated by the relationship between the two main characters which could not be more inauthentic imo. The nail in the coffin, however, was the sense that something awful was going to happen to the family cat. Reviews I’ve read indicated that was correct.
