I last read Under Milk Wood back at school and enjoyed it very much the second time around! It definitely feels like we barely get to know the characters - it’s so short, but it’s also enough to fall in love with them!

Mischievously poetic. Quaintly idiosyncratic characters. Haunted by the dead

Damn, this is good.

And that pretty much does it.

You should listen to it. I listened and read along with the text from the Weidenfield and Nicholson 'Dylan Thomas Omnibus'. As a text, it would still be an interesting reading experience but as a performance, it is stonkingly good. From the moment Richard Burton's honeygravel Welsh voice begins you've swept into the lives, dreams and nightmares of the people of Llareggub.

And it is a huge cast of men, women and children and the chorus of voices and personalities carry you off, but it is the language and the delight that Dylan Thomas seems to take in his choice of words and rhythm that adds the final piece to the jigsaw.

This won't be the first time I listen to this. In fact, I think I might listen to it again over Easter. I'm trying to find film versions too. There's a few out there. A Richard Burton one, a Michael Sheen one (which the BBC did I think) and a Rhy Ifans one.

Listen to it. You'll find it a delight.
