It was fine.

Everything about this book felt mediocre. I didn’t hate the main character but I didn’t like her either. I want to say there was some growth at the end but that was incredibly rushed(more on that later).

The premise of the story seemed feasible enough to keep the story going but unlikely enough to make me roll my eyes.

All of the characters felt like caricatures, like cardboard cutouts of high school rom-com stereotypes. No one was very likable-even Claire, who I desperately wanted to like.

From the very beginning, this book felt like fan fiction or like YA fiction, which I enjoy and don’t think there is anything wrong with it except for the fact that everyone in this story was in their 30’s. It felt like every character entered a period of stagnation for 12 years until the author could write this story and then give them the smallest amount of growth.

But this is a love story, isn’t it? I suppose, if we have any other romance book to go off of. How much did either love interest know about each other? It seemed like, at first, both women know that they found each other hot and they wanted to fu-actually, I take that back. There was a lot of denial of very unwarranted but intense feelings. Another aspect of the story that was just another played out rom-com trope, was the bet. Yes, the “I bet you I can -insert name here- to sleep with/date/fall in love with me” trope. I’ve hated it in movies, I hate that it is overdone and I hate it here.

There are incredibly important themes and situations in this book that could have been explored, family, grief, trauma but it didn’t feel like the book focused on these themes as much. Instead, it favored a sex propelled love story, a childish plot to break two people up and a 30 year old main character realizing that she’s not the center of the universe. The verdict? Everyone needs therapy.

So, what did I like? Uh, well, Delilah actually seemed to bond with Claire’s pre-teen daughter. She seemed to listen to the kid more than any other adult around her (save for her father, maybe). The smut was readable and vague, which is fine.

Delilah Green Doesn't Care was an objectively good book, but it wasn't the 5-star read I was expecting. It was a cute sapphic romance but something was missing for me. It just didn't give the same butterflies I usually get when I read these types of books.

Sure, it was spicy but the connection between Claire and Delilah just didn’t feel complete. I wanted more from their relationship than the casual, just-for-fun sex we got for the majority of the book. I wanted the cute domestic coupling we got sprinkled between the hook-up scenes.

Maybe then the ending wouldn’t have left me wanting more from a story that was nearly 400 pages long.
