I always enjoy reading about Kaylee and the gang, but this one fell short for me. I kept waiting for the story to pick up and then it ended. But I think it is a set up for the next one. I have enjoyed the growth and changes all the characters have gone through. Many YA series never change and evolve. The soul screamers series is not one of these. If you told me what was going to be happening in book 6 when I was reading book 1 I would not have believed you. It has not been predictable at all. I can't wait to find out what happens.

Original review at Gabic Reads

Rachel Vincent has created another amazing installment to the Soul Screamers series. We get to see a side of Kaylee we've never seen before. She's struggling to keep a front for her dad and friends but when she's alone, it all falls away. She doesn't feel alive and is extremely depressed.
That said, the only time she does feel alive is when she's with Tod. Oh, how I love thee, Tod!! When I first read the series I never really saw Kaylee's relationship with Tod coming, until BAM! There it was and I immediately fell in love with him and realized how messed up and wrong Kaylee's relationship with Nash was. And then I went back and re-read the books and fell in love with the other Hudson boy. I came to realize that Nash and Kaylee's relationship was almost purely physical. And then in BIW, we get to see even more of Tod and Kaylee.
I fell in love with it from the start, just as I have all the other books. I can't wait for With All My Soul (2013) and I really want to know what her new YA project is :)

If you have not yet read IF I DIE, or any of the Soul Screamers books I suggest you skip the summary and most of this review. The last two paragraphs of this review are spoiler free.

I have been hooked on this series since the very first book and none of the books have disappointed. BEFORE I WAKE was a wonderful addition to the Soul Screamers series and it left me wanting the next book now!

BEFORE I WAKE starts off shortly after IF I DIE and jumps right in to another fast paced plot. The first fifty pages or so were not very exciting and I found myself getting antsy for the real action to start. After those first pages the story really picks up. There was some action, mystery, and romance.

Can I just say how much I love Tod? From the very first moment I caught wind of Tod's feelings I could not stop rooting for him! You see in this book how amazing he really is and how perfect he is for Kaylee. They are one of my favorite couples in any book ever! As for the other characters, I loved how Rachel Vincent handled the "re-birth" of Kaylee. I don't think anyone can imagine going from alive to dead to somewhat alive, yet still dead. The way Kaylee was written and characterized really helped with understanding that. It's hard to explain, but when you read the story you'll understand.

One of the only problems I had with the book was Sabine. I've never liked her and just found her so annoying in this book. I find her selfishness and whining over the top. Sure, most of the other characters can be selfish and whine, but she is nonstop. I honestly do not understand how she fits in with everyone else. I hope she gets a wake up call soon and realizes she is not the most important thing in the world.

If you haven't read any of the Soul Screamers books you are missing out (and hopefully you skipped the summary...)! Your sure to enjoy the entire series because it is filled with all sorts of awesome mythological creatures, fast paced plots, and even romance. What more could you ask for?

Overall BEFORE I WAKE was basically everything I hoped it'd be and more. I don't think it is the best book in the series, but it is definitely in the top three.

I didn't realize that this was part of a series until I had started reading it. It was a library book, so I choose to continue with it. Not the best book I've read. It was OK - but not good enough to make me want to pick up any of the other books in the series and read them.

Okay. So this is definitely one of my favorite series. I could go on, and on about my love towards all these characters and Rachel Vincent but I think I did that many, many times so I'm going to stop here.
My favorite is still If I die, I mean that book is just everything but there were so many cute moments in this one, I absolutely adored them. The end though... Can't really imagine what is happening in the last one, but I'm so not ready to let them go, but I'm sure it's going to be epic.
Loved this one, absolutely.

I was so excited to get back to Kaylee and Tod and see what happens next! I felt so sad and left out when I had to wait to read this book while everyone else had! I was so happy to finally read this book and I wasn't let down! This book was absolutely incredible and I loved every moment! There was a lot of conflicts and romance and reoccuring action. There was also a lot of resolving of some problems and some characters even grew together and became closer. This book is the turning point to where the next book is going to be the bomb, literally. This book changed so many relationships between characters and it was such a fun and easy read. I loved it! Vincent definitely didn't let down on this one! The end was really shocking, and it was really sad. There was a lot of deaths in this book that were really sad and terrible, one particular person stands out in my memory, because he was a great person and good to Kaylee. The whole thing was sad and I can't wait for the next to see Kaylee get revenge! I am so glad I got to read this book, I can't even give this book a review that's worthy of it! This book was just too good for words, and I can't wait to get my hands on the next!

I can't believe that's there's only one more book until the end! I'm excited for the next one yet hesitant to see it be over. I just finished this about five minutes ago, wrote the review and then rewrote it after my phone spazzed out (damnit). Anyways, this was good all the way through and was full of confrontation. I was so involved in the story that I didn't notice that I had reached the last page. This is uncommon for me, but its likely because of the way the book closes. It's a bit of a cliffhanger, but not an overboard one like...Catching Fire (yeah I said it). It's much more 60s Batman---WHO WILL SURVIVE? WILL AVARI GET WHAT HE WANTS? WILL EMMA BE OK WITH WHAT'S HAPPENED? TUNE IN NEXT WEEK! SAME BAT TIME! SAME BAT CHANNEL!
Also, Tod is awesome. He's one of the more humanly written undead characters I've come across in the past few years.

This book was by far one of my favorites in the series. Rachel's talents shined amazingly in Before I Wake.

Kaylee is the kind of heroine I just love to see. Tod was just breathtakingly awesome, and I'm even more in love with him.

Before I Wake was just simply a ride I loved, I couldn't put this book down, and when I had to, I couldn't stop thinking about Kaylee and the gang. Waiting for the next book is going to be torture, with everything that took place, I need With All My Soul now!!!
