I view this as mostly a philosophy book. It has lessons and points from a dozen different books all contained in one. A very good book with several invaluable lessons throughout history on how to live a good life.

This was an interesting read. It wasn't too dense, it felt easy to read, and covered a variety of topics to help encourage 'stillness' in one's life. It also provided examples from people's lives that were not always positive and successful (which I enjoy when books do this), in addition to one's that could inspire and provide hope in helping one change their life for the better. I liked how it covered ideas from a mind, body, and soul perspective as this holistic approach can be beneficial for those who may feel they are stuck in one area, but could create improvements in the others and have those become a positive domino effect for change. Plus I haven't read basically anything on philosophy before so I found it easy to digest and found he was able to describe those abstract thoughts into practical everyday points of action.

As a social worker and counsellor, my one fault in the book is that I don't feel like it provided enough attention to privilege and how it may not be feasible and realistic for some to introduce these concepts into their life (e.g. take a nap/get more sleep, go for a walk). But I don't criticize this point too harshly because it is a small book so I understand there wasn't enough space to have a good enough dialogue on these points.

Overall I would recommend this book if you would like to create changes in your life and want to gather a bunch of ideas at once.

When philosophy meets poetry thinking lasts forever. Take the time to listen to your own silence.

Training the mind, soul, and body in the premise of Stoicism takes more than a book, but this is a good start to do so.

I have enjoyed several other books by Holiday but found Stillness Is the Key to be his weakest effort so far. His style in this book is much more of the self-help genre than previous books. If the idea of meditation or other contemplative practices is foreign, you will learn some nuggets from this book -- though there are much better books if this is the case. If you are already practicing or familiar with meditation this book doesn't off much in the way of useful new learning.
