I think the content is as harrowing as it is interesting but the writing really didn't do this memoir justice, unfortunately.

I think I’ll always give memoirs a 5 star unless it or the author sucks but fortunately that was not the case. This book was so harrowing and made me truly reflect on the ideals of morality and innocence. I will never forget some of the scenes from this book and it’s absolutely heartbreaking that a child had to experience this.

Graphic descriptive effects of war - death, injury, mutilation and I was in the mood for something more light-hearted

Such a tragic accounting of the horrors of war told by the author from his own life experience as a child soldier in a civil war. It's definitely sobering to realize that he, along with so many other children, were living these horrors during my own childhood/teenage years. I can't even imagine. 4 stars for being well written, almost reads like a recollection of a dream, lyrical...which is a stark contrast to the brutal subject matter that enveloped his formative years.
