Reading this felt like coming home. Hadlow brought some of my favourite character’s back to life from a new perspective and I loved every moment of it. It’s also made me want to give poetry a proper try.

I loved this. It's over 600 pages but I didn't want it to end. Hadlow has taken the characters from Pride and Prejudice and made a brilliant new story. It starts before the events of P&P, follows that plot from Mary's point of view and then after about 200 pages the story is Hadlow's own, as Mary makes her way in the world. The way she developed Austen's characters felt very faithful and realistic and I was so rooting for Mary. I'll never think of her in the same way again. I'm often wary of retellings but this struck the perfect tone for me.

Wow, the turmoil over whether to make this a 5-star read or not. Mostly because I've never been so particular before, so it skews my previous reviews. Oh well.

This was so genuine to Pride and Prejudice, which is mostly to its complement but is also the reason it's not a full 5 stars for me. I've read quite a few Austen adaptations at this point and most are reimaginings, but this is straight up an alternate future set in the same universe as the original. The style of writing is true-to-period, as are all the plot points and conventions throughout. It's honestly remarkable in that sense.

Alas, I felt the romance started to resemble P & P just a tad too much in parts.

Warm, gentle and redemptive. The audiobook is narrated well. A bit slow and depressing at times but stick with it.
