I stopped reading this for a while because I was more interested in other books, but I finally picked it up again and I really liked it. This was a little slow to get into, but it was still very good and I’m excited to get the next one :)
The whole concept of this series is really cool and the story is amazing, I can’t wait to see where it goes next

Here's some live reactions because I don't have a review in me rn:
pod racing scene!
the phoenix who visited Val was definitely Ignix, right??
ooh this is cool, seeing all the different Phoenix Rider houses!
I'm so glad Veronyka told Morra!❤️
but oh no I feel a misunderstanding coming with Tristan re: her in his head? idk, he was super cool about her being a girl
So Elliot is important enough for a POV now
Sparrow is young-Daine, confirmed
TRISTAN I love this boi
also he's bi or pan, yessss
omg he and his father talked about girls, this is awkward but cute
oh no Sev :'( this interrogation is tough. but Kade!!
look at Veronyka taking charge and helping the village!
Val showed up?? Coincidence??
Sparrow, you're a bad influence. Spying is what got Elliot into trouble
Kade is in Sev's room❤️
I'm so glad Veronyka and Tristan talked it out!!
KADE!!!!! Be okay!!
Oh dear, Val is losing control of the situation
obvs she's not dead, but yikes
I was right, she was Ignix! But also Xatara?!

Absolutely stunning sequel to the series. Following the events of the last series, we learn more about Veronyka's and Val's pasts, and we are introduced to more viewpoints from other characters. The empire threat grows against our Phoenix riders as they can no longer stay in hiding. Relationships become more complicated as the main characters become further entwined with the politics set in motion by the previous generation, magical abilities are explored and expanded, and the bonds of blood family and found family are tested.
The pace of the book is slow, but the world-building and character development are amazing. I felt like I was experiencing everyone's realizations and emotions in real time, and it bonds you to the characters. There are multiple main characters, most of whom are depicted as diverse. Two major characters are gay (LGBTQ+) and another major character is blind (disabled), which is just amazing to see in a book.
*** Note for audiobook: Amazing. They use different voice actors for different character viewpoints (third person) and it just adds so much to my connection with the characters.

As with any books that includes war, there is some violence, blood, and death. Some people are confined temporarily as prisoners.
