I might come back to this later but right now it feels boring and bleak. The writing feels clunky and confusing. 🫠idk!!! I might be too dumb for this one

I had NO idea what I was in for with this book. I bought it because it was 'local', set in Appalachia, and because the cover was beautiful.
This book shattered me. It was so beautifully written. I immediately bought another book from the author because I need more. (Although I will be taking a break because my heart needs to recover)
Betty is pure art, and I already know it's one that will stick with me for a very long time. This goes on my 'all time favorites' list.
A very strong trigger warning, though. This book has ALL the triggers.

This book broke my heart into a million pieces. Then broke it again. I love this family. This family of Cherokee traditions and stories. This family of family abuse. This family of three sisters.
Betty is one of six surviving children. After years of traveling the country, her parents decide to return to Ohio.
Betty starts school - harassed, tormented, bullied.
But she is rich in family. Her father's love, his stories give her a foundation, an identity. Her sisters and brothers imagination, connection, bravery. Her mother always a mystery - depression, mood swings and life.
I cried so many times reading this family history. Their tragedies. Their reality.
I cannot celebrate this author's bravery enough. Her family's bravery and honesty.
Trigger warning - sexual abuse.
