My real rating is like, a 4.99/5, and the only reason this book doesn't get a 5/5 stars is b/c I felt like I needed to age everybody up a little bit. Just for my 23 year old black woman brain to comprehend it. But otherwise? This is an AMAZING read. Upon reading it the second time, I almost forgot how touching a fantasy book could be. Like, I haven't read this in a long time, but I've read many fantasy books in between, and not any of them reached me so well. Even though Bree is a literal 16 year old from NC (and I am very much not, hence why I aged her up for my imagination), Deonn still writes her in such a fashion that makes me resonate with her. I can feel the closeness Bree was feeling when remembering her mom cook & going to breakfast with her dad. Even the palpable curiosity but fear in investigating and unraveling your family history while being black in America. SOUTHERN America, at that. Deonn still finds a way to tap into these emotions while developing this insane magic system and love plot.

Spoiler which,  I need more talk on the whole, NickxSelxBree thing that's developing.
