That was what you did. You died. You did not know what it was about. You never had time to learn. They threw you in and told you the rules and the first time they caught you off base they killed you. Or they killed you gratuitously like Aymo. Or gave you the syphilis like Rinaldi. But they killed you in the end. You could count on that. Stay around and they would kill you.

Just a little two slow paced for me.
Spoiler After the accident the hospital section of the text seems to stretch out unnecessarily.
I’ll probably end up giving it another go as some point.

This book feels like it's meandering, but by the end you realize that the payoff requires the seemingly excessive setup. Definitely a step up from Hemingway's first novel. I don't give full marks because there's probably a couple too many detours that could have been cut, but other than that, this is a great book. The Sun Also Rises was poignant at the end but didn't exactly feel worth it, but A Farewell to Arms is genuinely touching and impactful at the end and makes you feel like only a good piece of art can.
