Whimsical and timeless is how I think of this one. The spin on portal fantasy and how it works for those who travel to Fairyland is intriguing. I love the illustrations at the start of every chapter and the way the narration makes the book feel like a fairy tale. September views herself like the any other child from her books that's transported to another world, but she is the main character of her own story. She has to choose again and again how she wants her story to end, which is a great lesson for us all. The creatures in Fairyland and its whole structure are fascinating. I only wish a map was included in the book. Sooner or later, I will definitely check out the rest of the series.
The timeless factor derives from that I could easily believe this book was published a few years ago or one hundred years ago. To me the best fairy tale books do not fit in a solid time, which I find to be true of most books this one reminds me of.
