This was my second Kristin Hannah book. Summer Island was my first and I didn’t love it. This book….excellent. Really enjoyed the characters and the strength of Leni. This young girl is strong and while I hated that she had to be an adult way too early…to see her find happiness is good for the soul. Alaska has always been on my list of places to visit. Maybe not where she grew up but I’m eager to see it. Grace, love, acceptance and family are all full flowing in this book. Ready for my next KH book.

I’m always looking for great books to read, one that I can read during breaks at work or that I can use to take a break from studying. I have a whole collection of books at my apartment but sometimes, I enjoy checking out a new book from the library. The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah was a peak pick at the Seattle Public Library when it caught my attention and it is now one of my favorites. You can read the rest of my review of The Great Alone on my website at http://thecoffeeaddict.org/2019/03/15/the-great-alone-by-kristin-hannah/

talk about expansive character arcs, lennie and her mom go through a lot, learn a lot and do get to better places both literally and emotionally/mentally! but, too much intimate partner violence and traumatic events for this to be anything but a emotional wince for me.

I have so many feeling about this book. On the one hand, I didn’t even want to keep reading because I hated Ernt Albright so much but on the other, kudos to Kristin Hannah for writing such a vile character to encode said hatred. Alaska was a formidable backdrop and one I had never really explored. Hannah’s family’s personal experience definitely enhanced the experience. Who else wants to be one of those stupid tourist out there exploring the wild now? The only thing that kept me from giving this book 5 stars was the stupid decisions I think Lenora wouldn’t have made. She was smarter than that. Overall a good read even if terribly uncomfortable and had to be put down for a break. As my friends suggested to me, keep reading.

If I could give this book a million stars I would. The ending makes this book worth every word. It was difficult to finish reading through my tears. The development of this female character hits home with any woman who has had struggles out of their own control and resiliency that it takes to carry on.

This book, like another of Hannah’s books, The Nightingale, instantly gripped me. The story feels real. It’s heartbreaking and uplifting. A truly wonderful experience.

Slow start, But OMG THIS BOOK

At first, I didn’t know what all I was getting into. I almost abandoned Leni and her adventure several times. The beginning of the book was interesting, but not gripping. Because of the reviews, I pressed on. I read the second half of the book in less than 12 hours (and I slept for most of those hours). I truly was able to connect with the characters and cried and cried with them- both happy and sad tears. The ending was all I could have asked. This book and the characters will stay with me forever. Highly recommend.
