Incredible -- the third book in the Books of the Raksura, this is definitely the best one so far.  I cannot give five stars enthusiastically enough.  This is more emotional than the previous book, and the characters in multiple Raksura colonies are really well developed.  While the novel concludes in a way that doesn't read like a cliff-hanger, I cannot wait to read more.

Note: This is the third book in a series comprised of 5 novels and two collections of novellas/shorts.  The prior novels are required reading for this one.

Content warnings elaboration: cannibalism can only be described as 'of a sort?' (there are no humans in these books); one species attempting to capture individuals from another to forcibly breed with them is a theme throughout this series

The horror elements were too much of the story for me. In the first book I just skipped over the fight scenes, in the second I wasn't comfortable but tried not to think about it too much, and hoped it was just that book, but here there were too many gory, disgusting, disturbing and otherwise awful scenes to slog through, and I just didn't enjoy the experience. I like the characters, I like the world, but spending such a large amount of time trapped in horrific circumstances just doesn't make for a positive reading experience for me.

N. K. Jemisin's review was not wrong, I did like this one more than the previous two! I really think Wells hits her stride here - I was very invested in Moon's whole journey, and his struggle to fit in what he is being told with what he's experienced and the narrative he's been telling himself for years. Also, the big bads are really spooky, which makes it very gripping.
