you can see just how much research was made by author. i loved it and i love how realistic and interesting it is. i also loved the characters but i feel like i didn’t really connect with them, more like the idea of them.

it could be the best sapphic book ever written. i just couldn’t leave it. i love how the end just lets you imagine the rest of it. i would’ve loved if it had a decent and clear ending but it’s better this way i guess and im not complaining. malinda lo just knows how to write and makes you feel certain things. i also loved how it was written in detail -from street names to the cultural elements. i could talk about this book for hoursssss

Slightly disappointed in myself that it took me this long to get to reading this because I LOVED it! Really enjoyed reading a lesbian, Asian American story and I learned a lot about the history, too. Highly recommend :')

Great book! I always appreciate a good lesbian historical fiction and it was a treat to learn a little about Chinese culture in 1960s San Francisco while I was at it. Great read!

I need more Asian-American lesbian stories set before the 1990’s. I love the representation of Asians coming to America to study, and because of circumstances unplanned chose to stay. Getting a sense of how it was to be a young lesbian finding out who you are when every one of your “elders” are underground is well realized.

However, I feel like they made Kath underdeveloped. I can only guess why she didn’t get as much nuance as Shirley.

This book was perhaps the best book I've read all year. From it's nuanced portrayal of teenaged lives, to the fear that coming of age as a queer teen during the Lavender Scare, to the dangers of being a Chinese American during the Red Scare. This doesn't gloss over the awfulness that 1950s America was, but it doesn't sensationalize it, either. Genuinely one of the most beautiful representations of human beings grappling with a difficult world, despite being flawed themselves, and how love changes us.
