I have read this book twice. First when I was in high school for my AP English class and then again during college in a Russian literature class after I had taken a few Russian history and culture classes. Both times I took a lot away from the book. Dostoevsky has a unique grasp on human nature based on his understanding and immersion in a culture that is unlike any other.

Well, the first time reading it a friend of mine toldme that it was a murder mystery type of book but I think he described it wrongly. For me it is more a psychological thriller kind of book because you clearly know who the murderer is on the early chapter of the book. So, if you come here and you wish to have a murder mystery book, no you won't have it.

But, the interesting concept about this book is- reading it feels like going into a mind of a murderer. what made him justify his own actions to take someone's life, what were the external factors that prompted him to kill someone and how the effect of killing itself to him. I think Dostoevsky wants to show readers to examine crime from a much broader perspective - a perspective that questions the implicit and explicit connection between the criminal and the criminal justice system that show on the storyline on the book. it is a brilliant way to explore the psychological side of someone by telling a story. I am going to read of Dostoevsky's works after this one.

What a read. I was intrigued, bored, fascinated, puzzled, interested, and infuriated by this book off and on throughout. Raskolnikov is a former student living in poverty who commits murder, seemingly without remorse. This story is a deep dive into how he is punished by that action, both mentally and physically, and how those around him are affected by his unpredictable and frightening behavior. The scenes alternate between feverish ramblings of incoherence and slow and methodical actions of one who's come to terms with his fate, and can be repetitive and taxing at times. The book is not especially plot driven, but rich in character development, not only with Raskolnikov but also those around him including his mother and sister, his friend Razmuhin, and later his chance at happiness, Sonya. I'd cut about 200-250 pages of the tortured soul stuff out, and it'd be at least 4 stars.
