I never understood people who read Lolita and are so charmed by Humbert they forget that he's a pedophile. And then I read this book and that distinct first-person narrative voice of Merricat draws you in when she is childish and psychopathic and spends most of the book doing complicated rituals that have no effect on her world because this isn't a magic realist book just Merricat being disconnected from reality and yet,

Nothing really surprised me in this book, not because of the writing (it was good), but because plot was very predictable and I didn't care about the characters, except the cat. If you're like me always worry about animal's destiny in books/media, the cat in this book
is alive and ok!
. I was dissatisfied we didn't really get a reason for what happened with the family, but I guess that's what the author intended to do.

Unfortgettable narrator. Funny and painful and magical all at once. Quite feminist in a twisted way. Layers and layers of subtext, but not in a way that keeps you outside of the story.
