A whole new world!

This is my now favorite of Charlie Holmberg’s books. She created a whole new world that somehow felt both fantastical as well as post-apocalyptic. I couldn’t put it down. Her characters came alive. Lark, a human girl with a strange gift, runs from town to town looking for a place where she won’t be ostracized for being different. In a last ditch effort for acceptance, she winds up in Cagmer, Home of the Trolls. She is the lowest of the low and only allowed to stay because of her strange gift. She begins to make her way and find a few friends. But when she falls in love, the situation is unacceptable to the trollis people and begins a series of events where both she and her love will be tested to her core!

I STRUGGLED to finish this.

Confusing genre, seemed very YA with an extremely cliche and naive character who seemed younger than her age, but that is counterbalanced with suggestive rape scenes. She should not be so naive. It reminded me of the Children’s book “Are you my Mother” except she is desperately going from person to person bending over backwards for belonging. Will you be my friend and accept me?

The plot resolutions did not match the developed characters and seemed too easy.

And her “magic” seemed to be whatever the plot needed it to be or have whatever restrictions were needed at the given time.

Finally, felt super religious in undertones. She is seeking faith, no “relations” until marriage, she just wants to know her place in society, support the status quo, and find someone with whom to have babies.

This book was not for me.

The main characters primary trait being afraid doesn’t make her very interesting.

The concept of the city was interesting but the rest of the magic system… it was boring to me. Lark’s power felt really underdeveloped and unexplained so I wasn’t invested.

As for the romance… I’m sorry. Could not get behind it :/ The whole time I was thinking wtf and so couldn’t feel sympathy when they faced conflict.
