I'm having a hard time deciding how to rate this book. 3.5 feels like the right spot, but since 3.5 is not an option, I'm opting for 4. The stories can be definitely feel disjointed, especially earlier on in the book, and it can be hard to follow, but overall I enjoyed it. The art is also lovely.

Zuo Ma captures a China in transition, the uneasiness of urban development and the destruction and change that it brings to the countryside. The way his art expresses the anxieties of the time is visceral and strange in a delightful way. However, the stories themselves are confused, disjointed. Metatextual references to writing this book feel self-obsessed and wandering, detracting from the story. While the surrealism can evoke an emotional response from the reader, the pacing and lack of clarity make the actual act of reading this book a bit of a headache. Characters bounce in and out of the narrative and the story diverges and converges unpredictably. The black and white style both adds to the uneasy effect and makes distinguishing anything difficult. Night Bus is worth flipping through, but I wanted to like it more than I actual enjoyed reading it.
