This is just one of those sad books that make me fear love. The characters are beautiful and strong in their own way but love (and the various forms it takes in this book) makes them weak, vulnerable. The writing is poetic. The author has done wonderful research to give us a picture of a rather tumultuous time in Indonesia and setting a love story in it. My heart is now stuck with Amba in the pages of this book.
