A beautiful retelling of Cinderella that is so unique it is nearly an entirely new story altogether. I was entranced immediately in pages of rich prose filled with faeries, magic, and whimsy.

This book really reminds me of the vibe in [b:Fire|6137154|Fire (Graceling Realm, #2)|Kristin Cashore|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1331535456l/6137154._SY75_.jpg|6128277] and oddly enough they were written in the same year. Just thought that was interesting.

This book was okay, I enjoyed the sapphic rep and the twist on the Cinderella story. It's like if you took [b:A Court of Thorns and Roses|16096824|A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1)|Sarah J. Maas|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1546406962l/16096824._SY75_.jpg|21905102] made it sapphic and then through in some references to Cinderella, you would have this book.

This book was so satisfying! It's one of those books I'm been looking my whole life for. I wish I could back in time to high-school-me and go "here, have this book...its got handsome fairies and kick-ass reimaginings of princesses, and girls falling in love...read it, now!"

Ash is a really interesting reworking of the Cinderella tale. While some aspects have been seen before, most of them were new and exciting, and really broadened the story. Instead of a Fairy Godmother, Ash has a handsome fairy who seems inexplicably drawn to her. Instead of a prince, she falls into a slow romance with the King's Huntress. She gets lovely fairy trinkets, but even when all her dreams are coming true, she feels like somethings slightly off. This book isn't about her finally being recognized by royalty, or being rescued from a long abusive life; it's about her figuring out who she is, and how to rescue herself.

My one real complaint is that I wish the beginning could have been a bit shorter, and the end a bit longer. It took be awhile to really get into the book, and I think that was because we needed to be really grounded in this version of the fairytale--we really needed to know how her childhood came about, in order to really understand Ash. However, the book picked right up once it jumped forward to teenager-Ash, and only got better and better. I just wish the end could go on forever. It doesn't need a sequel per se, but I want to know what happens next!

You know, I just REALLY wanted to like this one. (And let me kick this off by saying, as a straight female, I was neither offended nor turned off by the girl-loves-girl thing) I just felt empty at the end. From the start I was hooked (fairy-tale retellings rock my socks off) - it was so textured and layered --> the writing was LUSH. So many amazing descriptors and the dialogue moved at a wonderful pace. The backstory flowed well with the present. Then it just all started to let me down. All the "insta-loves" I could've even handled if I would've felt any depth/connection. At the end, it just...well...ENDED. I'm not going to say I didn't enjoy it, I just doubt I pick it back up again :(

LOVED this. A very imaginative retelling of the story. The prose was full (if that is a proper way to describe it? I can't put my finger on the right word) and I loved Ash.
