This novel was easy to read and get sucked into. All of the characters were realistic, and made me think of my own high school friends and classmates. The ending was, of course, a little sappy and predictable, but the majority of the story is strong enough to stand up despite the wimpy resolution.

I read this in 2015 and I loved it. Reading it years later, I do love Wesley and Bianca but the book reeks of misogyny, like the concept of the DUFF alone is so nasty and Bianca goes through a lot but she’s quite mean and not the best friend? I did like her and Wesley a lot though and for its era, I do like it. A nostalgic re read!

I admit I read the book because I thought the movie was cute (and Robbie Amell is such eye candy). The book has almost nothing in common with the movie except character names and the concept of the DUFF. I think it would have been more interesting to see the story as it was written verses the rom-com PG version in the movie. The characters have much more depth in the book.

It wasn’t till after finishing the book that I realised it was written by an 18 year old, but it honestly didn’t feel like it. A) Because the writing reflected maturity, unlike other books written by young authors ie Halo by Alexandra Adornetto (Which I personally hated). And B) because of the number of times the F* Bomb was dropped.

The whole idea surrounding the book, is that in each group of girls there is a Duff. While reading the book, you start to understand the point of view the author is trying to get across. The book is not simply a ‘woe is me’ story about a self-conscious girl and all her body issues, but rather a story about the self consciousness that all woman posses at some point in time... even the drop dead gorgeous ones. At some point in their life, everyone feels like the duff. A designated ugly fat friend; the one who is not necessarily less pretty but feels less pretty than the rest of her cohort. I know that I’ve definitely felt like the duff of my group, but there have been times I know my friends have felt the same way also.

As the book progresses I, along with the main character Bianca, go from hating the word (purely because it makes me think of my ugly duckling days) to accepting it, as a way of feeling rather than a way of being. I think this is a great book for young girls (Despite the large scale amount of swearing), as it deals with the insecurities that all of us have at some point or another. The book was simple, yet heartfelt and I found myself getting very attached to the characters which oozed personality.

I. DID. NOT, ENJOY. THIS. AT. ALL.

nothing works for me. NOTHING.

that surprises me actually because ive read a lot of good things (and a fair amount of bad reviews as well) on this one so I thought i might like it but meh.

I dont like the way Kody writes. Its annoying and a bit immature. Most of the events/things arent described that well. It felt like it was rushed.

The plot, is so very incredibly cliche. I dont find anything worth remembering. Its very plain.

Bianca - If i could throw her off the cliff, OH I SERIOUSLY WOULD WITHOUT ANY HESITATION. Shes whiny, shes immature, she swears too much (even for unnecessary reason), she ditches her friends when things got messed up. The whole sexcapades is so annoyingly irritating. i could understand her actions on making sex as stress reliever (im perfectly fine with that honestly bcs ive read a lot of such actions/decisions elsewhere) but the way it was written is so bad that i can't even tolerate this one this time around. you know when you dislike someone, even her sound of breathing annoys you ? that's exactly how i felt with Bianca

Wesley - hes everyone's favourite but absolutely not mine. He sounds a lot like Peter K from To All The Boys Ive Loved Before but the way Kody portrays Wesley here didnt do it for me. ( WHERE AS FOR PETER K, I LOVE HIM TO BITS. I literally cringed while reading Wesleys letter/love note to B. just no.

Bs parents - How they handle their issues annoys me. theyre the adults here but i cant even picture them as one. I think it's probably bcs It was too immature and childish.

Bottom line is, i think the main reason why i hate this book so much is because of the way Kody wrote this, A friend told me that her other books are good but i think i'll pass, This alone is enough for me. No more.

The DUFF movie is going to be released in cinema soon, and i really want to see how it turns out, despite my poor judgement of the book.

Okay yeah, so this is actually my first one star I have ever given to a book on Goodreads. Let me just say that I absolutely hated this book. I seriously do not know what all the hype is all about. It took everything in me to actually pick it up and finish it... Let me just say that i did read this book forever! There are so many reasons that i did not like it. If I have to start listing them I won't finish today. Let me start with this Toby guy, okay what the hell is so perfect about him? He was the most boring and uninteresting character that I have come across in a long time! Wesley, I think he is probably the only reason I actually finished the book, he was by far the most interesting of them all. Her friends just down right irritated the crap out of me, very very bossy and pushy. And then there was Bianca.... Holy crap what a bitch! It was so unrealistic that she actually had ANY friends at all, in real life you will be out on your ass for being so verbally abusive, bitchy, self centered and full of crap! And that is another reason that Made it so fake, NO guy would put up with her! I am just going to stop my review here, as I will probably go on forever on this fakenessnessnessness. So not worth the money I spent on this book.

I have been wanting to read this book for a while, especially since I had seen the film already and had heard that the book was way better. I love that the book was written by a teenager - not that adults can't write authentic-feeling YA books, but when they really are authentic it's another experience to read them. I quite enjoyed the movie, but reading the book did give me a few surprises - like the fact that Toby wasn't meant to be a jerk after all, and Wesley was meant to have curly hair. Also, I don't remember there being so much sex in the movie (not that I'm complaining), so I guess the toned it down for the big screen - or else I just am not remembering clearly.

All in all, this was a quick read, which tells me it was one I loved. And it's my 42nd read of the year!! I am going to really miss reading this many books next year, since I'll be studying again and won't get much time to read what I want to.
