I am so gonna send Victoria my therapy bills… how could you do this?! WHY? *sobbing*

Sigh… this book was amazing. And painful…

Anyway, I loved it!

Honestly, the first one was way better. This one felt like it was dragging forever. I don’t know if it was just me and I was done with the story, but I could t handle Kate anymore. She was selfish and stubborn. Annoying at baseline. I was ready for it to be OVER. The reason I didn’t tank it lower in stars is that the writing style was really good. I want to read the adult novels by V. E. Schwab

Spoilers aside, I will say I was physically angry with how the ending of this book went down. Beware, its not going to happen the way you want it to.

I am underwhelmed by this sequel. Nothing about it particularly excited me and I don't feel as if I were connected to the characters or cared what happened. I remember really enjoying book 1 and the cliffhanger was insane but then this just didn't go where I thought it was going to go.

3.5 stars. Although it ended in a way I didn’t expect, the story didn’t suck my in as the first book did, which is certainly a quality for me to rate books higher.

Nice to have read a duology instead of a trilogy for once though.

Victoria has done it again. This woman knows how to write. Her worlds are interesting, her characters are well developed and the stories are always suspenseful and intriguing.

This two person POV continues the story of August and Kate, their lives in a city filled with monsters, crime and loss. Kate is and always will be a badass. August's personality has changed a lot since the last book: he wasn't himself and at first you need to get to know him all over again. But Schwab's writing shows you that while August has changed a lot, he's still the same person/monster deep down.

The city of Verity is crumbling and while this book didn't come with a resolution, the ending was everything that this duology needed. Surprising but not out of the blue and without reason.

Schwab is a fantastic fantasy writer and if you're new to the genre definitely start with her books.

It took me a long time to get through this book. Not because it was any less enthralling than the first - it was just as much so - but because I knew there was no chance at an ending that was going to make me do anything other than cry.

And while I was right about that - damn you, Victoria Schwab, how dare you leave my emotions in such tattered ruins - I will also say that the journey is incredible, the characters are worth knowing, and even with the heartache, there is a sense of hope that permeates the ending and soothes the hurt at least a little.

SPOILERS!!!

This would’ve gotten a higher rating if it weren’t for the fact that The Wardens were forgotten about. I expected them to come back and play a role in the final battle. I don’t understand their purpose for being written in. Kate could’ve been written as independent in Prosperity, but instead she had friends who she cared for. Kate didn’t even mention thinking about them as she was dying. AND THAT!!!!! Her dying, that made me angry. But that’s personal preference lol
