I wish a lot of the stories had been longer!

Strong surrealism vibes, based in Argentina. Dark, grotesque, graphic, and highly interesting. After every short story I was left feeling a little spooked and reflecting on what I just read. Wonderful writing!

I honestly just didn’t get it and I was not entertained. I finished the book only because I was reading it for a reading challenge. It wasn’t until the translator’s note that I began to sort of understand the intention behind the stories but still, the themes were darker and more horrifying than I was expecting/ wanting to read.

The wraiths of Argentina's violent past appear in her stories, but ultimately Enriquez's literature is not tied to any time or place. Rather, it appeals to ancient, creeping fears that prowl our subconscious, and that, in the worst of times, are acted out on our political stage.

This is horror as horror should be--real, beautifully written, gruesome, political, and riding the border between supernatural and natural terrors. What a collection, I had a great time.
