This was a great read. It is filled with realtime police work, as the pair try to solve a murder, which swiftly turns into two. They are racing the clock, and they use every skill and resource they have to bring a killer to justice.

I liked that this books realistic. They were using everything they could to find the killer, but they didn’t suddenly do so and they didn’t find themselves using millions worth of kit that most departments wouldn’t have, so it felt down to earth. It was also interesting getting to know the two, and how they combined to make a great team, when on the job. They have very different methods and personalities, which works we’ll together, especially in the field.

The level of extra connection that Jake’s past added to the crime made me feel even more attached to both him and the solving of the crime.

Overall, this was a very good read and one I really enjoyed.

An interesting procedural that gives the reader a look at the everyday life of homicide detectives, including their personal lives. The story has a good pace with the exception of a few drawn out parts here and there, and most of the characters are likable and believable. I enjoyed the interactions between Jake and his partner, Louie, and absolutely loved Louie's wife, Sophia. The biggest drawback for me was Mia, Jake's love interest. I was just never able to warm up to her and she is included in a large part of the book. That aside, the investigative side of this one did hold my interest and kept my curiosity piqued.

I really enjoyed this novel. It was a fairly standard Law and Order type book, with some home drama mixed in for good measure. More than one case, varying levels of difficulty being solved, a bit of steam in the personal lives. The one negative is that there was SO MUCH going on and the focus changes so quickly that, at times, my mind took a second to remember what exactly was going on.

So many red herrings! But so good! Definitely reading the next one in the series...
