Great sequel where we finish the boss fight that started in volume 1 against Yura of the Hair. It was very epic to see how much of an active character Kagome really is, as opposed to the passive damsel-in-distress, save-the-princess trope. It’s refreshing and empowering to see that Inuyasha (a half demon) needs her (a mortal human) just as much as she needs him. They’re a team of equal heroes. It makes you want to keep reading more of their adventures to learn how they combine Inuyasha’s demon strength and magical sword powers along with Kagome’s intelligence and human compassion to fight against other demons and collect the missing shards of the Shikon jewel.

——SPOILERS BELOW——

We also meet a new demon, the Nothing Woman who puts Inuyasha under her spell. This demon was used by Sesshomaru, Inuyasha’s shape-shifting brother, to arrive to their father’s shrine, where we find the Tetsusaiga sword which is under a protection spell. I loved that the sword’s purpose is to protect humans, as Inuyasha’s mom was human and his dad a demon. I enjoyed the introduction and exploration of Inuyasha’s family. I loved how Kagome saves Inuyasha from two demons in this volume (by breaking Yura’s comb that contained her soul, and freeing Inuyasha from the Nothing Woman’s spell) as well as facilitating Inuyasha’s win against the third demon by breaking the sword’s protection spell and allowing him to use the sword against Sesshomaru while she also fights off Jaken, his side-kick. It’s so amusing to see the characters’ personalities grow from these co-operative interactions.
