So surreal, and yet so frighteningly real.

I'm always interested to read memoirs of holocaust survivors, and have read many.

This one is chilling to read. The way it's written is detached and almost clinical, and yet at the same time conveys the terror and hardships so realistically. It's so sad to read, and yet a must read.

“The scent was the smell of burning flesh. The burning flesh of your mother”

Never has a Holocaust memoir made me cry this hard.

Vivid, visceral. Not a narrative but recollections of scattered scenes and experiences, and that form is somehow particularly striking. The afterword has stuck with me as well.

Such a beautiful memoir - it's raw, beautiful and somewhat astounding. It's a memoir that broaches the subject of being a Holocaust survivor. It's rich and deep - it's really a sentimental reminder of what happens again if we don't understand the context in which individuals such as Isabella and her family among many millions of others suffered from. Beautiful read and an absolute masterpiece.

Fragments of Isabella: A memoir of Auschwitz by Isabella Leitner and Irving Leitner (editor)
(Scribed). As a young woman, Isabella was transferred to Auschwitz from a ghetto with her mother, her sisters, and her brother. Her mother, brother, and two of her sisters died in Auschwitz. Isabella and two of her sisters survived. What makes Isabellas story unique is that it’s not told in straightforward almost historical prose. Her story is told in the way she remembers what happened, in disjointed burst of memories. It at times makes the book hard to follow but it adds to the understanding of what it must be like to actually live with the memories. Good book and she was very brave to write it.

Heart-breaking and full of honest hatred. This memoir illustrates the burden they had to endure long after liberation.
