I read this out of curiosity, knowing I would not like it. I was correct. It’s cheesey, poorly written, and quite toxic and ill-informed. Myers’s depiction of mental illness and
suicidal ideation
is quite insensitive, but makes sense as it was written in early 2000’s. The book was quite trope filled.

There were parts of the book I enjoyed. Some well written scenes, some compelling ideas. In general, I think Meyer had a creative idea; a modern day vampire in love with the person he wants to kill most; unfortunately it was horribly, horribly executed.

This is still a 5 even though I am so much farther into recognizing it for the gaslighting, controlling, paternalistic, colonizing nonsense it is. It's one of my first loves.

(One of) The problem(s) with this book is:
-- if you believe Edward, Bella is delusional and self-harming, and he is noble for trying to save her from herself, while also being deplorable (before that became a political buzzword) for continuing to bait her.
-- if you believe Bella, she has only now found something worth living and dying for, even though it's borderline toxic and abusive.

"When life offers you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations, it’s not reasonable to grieve when it comes to an end.”

Firstly, I just want to start by saying, if you want to read twilight...read it. Don't go scrolling through the negative reviews because you'll end up going into the series with an expectation and most likely will have that expectation fulfilled, because it's what you've been told you'll find. I've found that for me, the biggest issue around twilight is a lot of the people who 'hate it with a passion' and think the series is 'silly' and 'badly written', are people who have either: never read the series before, or went into it already hating twilight because that's what we've been taught to think. I don't have a problem with people not liking a book, I just don't understand why society has to embarrass girls and women for liking something? Especially something as simple and innocent as twilight.

Ok. Now into the actual review: I loved this book. I've fallen in love with this story and these characters. After watching the films years ago, I've always wanted to read the books and thought this October/November was finally the perfect time! I was a little worried that I would find the story a little 'childish', but at age 20, I still found I could relate heavily to Bella, and actually enjoyed the romance between Bella and Edward. However that being said, there were plenty of cringy moments, and chapters where I felt perhaps 16 year old Jess would've eaten this up a little more than third year uni student Jess.

I've never read a book that has so many details! At times it was odd to be reading about what Bella ate for breakfast, but I actually really enjoy Stephenie's writing style here. Knowing exactly how Bella opened her car door and drove to school actually made me feel more immersed in the story, as though I was actually stood beside Bella through each scene, feeling her every emotion. There's also so much beautiful imagery that really made me want to go to Forks and stand in the middle of the forest too.

Don't get me wrong, there were moments in this book that I wasn't really a fan of - Edward's annoying lack of communication when he's frustrated, Bella is lowkey boring, The story didn't really get going until the last sixty pages, the whole 'this is the skin of a killer Bella' when dude literally sparkles , the anti-feminism (Bella having to cook and clean for Charlie, Bella wanting to end her future for a boy she just met)...
But I enjoyed it. There's a real sense of nostalgia from this series despite the fact I'm reading them for the first time. I don't want to leave these characters (especially Alice). I don't want this story to end.

Okay don't come at me when I say that this book was a five out of five. I think many things went into the equation when it came to my rating:
- first, i'm incredibly impatient when it comes to romance and the characters need to get together almost instantaneously
- I love Robert Pattinson so despite the fact that Edward is pretty toxic and controlling I kept picturing Robert so I was enjoying it
- It's so bad, it's good. It's certainly not a work of art, but that's what makes it great.
Bella was pretty annoying and I am Team Edward but it's important to note that Bella is the problem not Jacob or Edward.

I’m surprised it was sooo much better than the movie. I think the main reason is that the characters are t as flat—at least not the Cullens. It’s nice to have some more focus and backstory on them and their motivations. Can’t say Bella is any better than the movie. If anything Jacob is worse, but I’ll have to see if he gets better in the coming books.

The writing was pretty bad. It was hard to follow the development at times, but the worst part was how repetitive it was. How many times can you reiterate on how beautiful or awkward someone is without adding any additional information? I got irritated. Side note, I think it’s fair to say the author has a thing for blondes.

That said, it was a fun, brainless book and that’s what I wanted out of it. I’m trying to put myself in the shoes of my 14-year-old self to see if it would be better then, but I think she was even more of a snob than I am now.

Obligatory note on Edward being a controlling creep. For anyone considering whether or not this is okay behavior or “hot”, nope it’s not. Run. His casual age difference mentions are classic groomer stuff. And his disregard for her autonomy is a major red flag. I don’t care if it’s fantasy, it’s not okay and it shouldn’t be normalized.

the .5 in my 2.5 score is for Bella's choice to wear a khaki skirt
