A Kingdom of Flame and Fury had me utterly captivated from the very first chapter. The plot is full of surprises with its unexpected twists and mysteries. Though I especially loved the wonderful world-building, but also the secretive, strong and yet vulnerable characters. And of course there were the smutty scenes

This hit all the right spots. Just everything I love in a fantasy. Great storyline, world building, interesting characters and captivating writing.

I think I liked this? like. a lot? and it had one of my least favorite tropes: love triangles.
CW/TWs: explicit spice + language, graphic violence, mention of SA, controlling + obsessive character (and not the fun type), and some of the spice scenes felt almost forced, not non con exactly, but it wasn't really completely consensual either.
there were a lot of things happening in this book. a lot of it was spice which was... a lot. almost too much. and I've never said that before, but it felt like it was happening every other page. it was written well tho and i liked it, I just wish there was more story and more of the characters in between.
BUT once you get past that, the story itself is really cool. Raven is a queen of Seolia and she has these powers that she's had all her life and had to keep secret. her best friend and advisor, Cade, is one of the few who knows and has been by her side the entire time she has been on the throne. Then in comes Zeke. Ezekiel. The visitor from Reales, a neighbor kingdom, and they both feel an instant connection that puts everything at risk. His mission (to get her to fall in love with him and take her back to Reales for his queen), her relationship with Cade (bc both have feelings that they've never voiced out loud until now) and her confidence and belief in herself.
Raven was very interesting to read about and I liked hearing about her powers and the growth and development of her character throughout the book was amazing. She went from feeling confident in herself, to losing sight of that and feeling and becoming reliant others, to then finding herself again and seeing that she is plenty capable of being her own person. without someone else having to "complete" her. Her thoughts and relationships with Cade, her kingdom and Zeke were something else that had me hooked. I was definitely rooting for Cade for the longest time, but now I'm not so sure I do.
I do wish we had gotten a little more insight into her and Zeke's powers, but I guess the way it is does work, because we are figuring it out alongside her. instead of just being told right away, so that was interesting too.
overall, I really liked it. I did think there was a liiittle too much spice like i said earlier, but I also don't think it overtook the story that was being told. I was hooked almost from the first line and I am very excited to see where Raven goes from here, and I LOVED the ending of this one :)

If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be frustrating. I loved the characters that Whitney Dean created (even the supporting characters were well-developed and complex), and just wanted more from them.
Raven is our female main character with a mysterious past and even more mysterious powers. While this was explored, it was relatively ignored in the whole middle of the book to focus on her relationships with two men who she can not function without. The love triangle was drawn out to the point where it was cringey, and I was so fed up with all three of them by the end of the book.
What this lacks the most is balance. While the love triangle was given too much focus, there was so much potential for more political nuance and we barely got any. The middle of the book is very slow, and it could have ended about 2/3 of the way through if the main characters just communicated. As a reader, the dual POVS let us know where they were both coming from, but they were so immature in their relationship that it was dragged on for so much longer than it needed to be and was never really resolved.
This ended on a cliffhanger, but I’m just not sure that I care about any of the characters enough to read the next book.

✨️Overall Story Opinion:
I'm OBSESSED! I love the world and character building as well as the general storyline the author has created. The female MC is a badass and I absolutely love those kind of characters.
